Client: Grimston Park Estate
Location: Tadcaster, N. Yorks
Based on a re-use of the main existing farmhouse, barn and outbuildings buildings this scheme provides a range of smaller office suites arranged around existing and new courtyards. There is a total area of 10,000 sq. ft. of office space. New extensions compliment the simple rural form of the existing building whilst providing high quality workspace that is easy to control and economical to run. Daylight has been maximised and a variety of openings provide views onto the courtyards and surrounding countryside whilst ensuring summer time comfort. A centralised ground source heat pump will provide space heating throughout. Due to planning restrictions, no external shading could be applied to the building and with a variety of organisations potentially using the offices some areas may require cooling in the summer months. This could be provided by the heat pump operating in reverse mode. However, the offices will come with manuals that simply describe the techniques of natural ventilation and cooling of the spaces to address this risk. Materials will be sourced locally and the planted areas will use native species whilst the parking areas employ porous paving to reduce flooding impacts.
